What motivated you to start your own photography business?

My business sort of evolved into one. I have always loved taking pictures of my kids and environment. Friends would see my kids pictures and ask if I would do pictures for their family, their daughters wedding, their head shots.. When I started getting requests like those, I really wanted to please those people with my photos. That is when I started studying photography deeper. Eventually I made it my full time job.

What has been your most exciting business opportunity?

I have worked with celebrities and traveled to Paris for business, but being invited to attend a birth is the most exciting of all! A birth is such a sacred, private event, and I feel so honored.

How do you balance your work and motherhood?

That is a challenge. I think I am still finding the balance. I have my computer in the living room and I'm not sure if that helps or causes more stress! I've often edited with a kid or two on my lap. I plan shoots around my families schedule. You wont find me at a shoot on Monday mornings because I will be at my 4 year olds dance class! Once I drove to a shoot, set up, left for dance class, and rushed back to the shoot.  Basically I think "What can be neglected today?" Normally it's the dishes!

What are your favorite characteristics of your kids?

Each of my 3 kids are so incredibly different. Luke, my 12 year old son, is so caring and protective of his brother and sister. He is a cool skater kid outside but at home he is a fort building big brother. My daughter, 4, is my idol. I always say "I want to be Kara when I grow up." Her mis-matched style mixed with her cautious personality and her adorable hair cut....Sigh. Then there is Lex who will be 3 this week. He is a rough-and-tumble child of the 80's HA! Seriously he would fit right in in 1984 suburbia. He is often playing dinosaurs rock'n a vintage Superman T and some floods.. or nude. haha

lukeskate5.jpg

What is your favorite time of the day or week?

Hot yoga is my favorite time of the week. I go to Moksha Yoga LA a few times a week. I love when in class they say "You are right where you need to be in this moment" and I think "HA! I need to be working, making dinner, cleaning..but I am here avoiding it!!!" I am grateful for that hour of avoiding life and the uninterrupted locker room shower after!

What are some good photography tips for beginners?

Read your camera manual. Then read it again. And then what the heck, read it again. It probably wont make sense until you read it the 6th time, so read it 8 times. I learned by reading tons, asking questions to anyone who would answer them and practicing like crazy. Every time I turn my camera on I am learning more. Every situation is different. Light is different, the subject is different. So just keep shooting! Each time you turn your camera on you will be better than the last time!

IMG_2902.jpg

When do you feel most relaxed and content?

Relaxed and content... probably after bedtime and there is likely wine involved!

DSC_2275.jpg

What is your "style uniform?"

I am discovering my style now. I spent the last 3 years in nursing tanks and an Ergo baby carrier. So I am in the process of rediscovering my style. I wear clothes that I can squat, lay in damp grass or hike in. Skinny jeans, boot, and a shirt that will not get in the way of my camera strap.

Christina, thank you sooo much for sharing your beautiful photography and life with us! So good to get to know you. :) xoxox, Kate

Mama Profile: Erin Loechner of Design for Mankind by Kate Brightbill

I have long been an inspired reader of Erin Loechner of Design for Mankind, and I'm honored to share her thoughts on life and motherhood and blogging today. She is one of those rare people who manages to combine an impeccable eye for design with an eloquence of words on her blog, so every post is beautiful and inspiring. While she was pregnant with her little Bee, she created Design for Minikind to share quality design in children's products as well.

1. What are your favorite things about Bee in her current stage of life?

Oh, it's a horrible thing to ask a mother what she loves about her kid and expect any less than one million words. ;) I think my favorite part about her current stage (almost 8 months!) is the bits of personality that are shining through each day. She's an art museum, full of wonder and curiosity and beauty - and then all of a sudden the exhibitions are changing and there are new things to see and watch and do. She changes and grows so quickly, and I'm truly having the greatest time of my life sitting on the bench, gazing in awe.

loechners-woodnote-22 copy.jpg

2. What do you enjoy most about being a mother?

I feel like becoming a mother forces you to transcend your current situation. I mean, you're kind of thrown into this utterly uncomfortable situation of postpartum healing and leaking milk and dirty diapers and endless tears, and then you wake up and realize that your newborn is a baby (and then a toddler, and then a child, and then a teenager...!) and you've made it through some really hard times together - and that you're a better person for it. You're kind of forced to no longer think about yourself as a singular unit, because you're now part of someone else's story. (I think, too, there's a deep urgency to make that story into something beautiful, which makes you rethink the role you're currently playing, you know?)

3. When do you feel most content/peaceful with your life?

During Bee's naps, I've started a ritual where I curl up on the couch in the morning sun and read a great memoir. There's no room for work or deadlines or busy-ness - it's just 45 minutes of slow words, soft pages, introspection. I'm quickly realizing that, in those moments, I am truly at peace.

slowing down.jpg

4. What has been your favorite stage of motherhood thus far?

It just keeps getting better and better! I wasn't the biggest fan of the newborn stage, so the older she gets, the more I treasure each moment.

5. Do you have tips for new moms?

The best advice I've applied to my life was to remember, "This too shall pass." When the moment is rough - it's 2am and she's not feeding and you can't figure out how to make her stop crying - that moment will be gone in an instant (although sometimes it feels like forever, yes?). Alternately, when the moment is perfect - she's gazing up at you with big eyes and a curious mind - that moment will also be gone in an instant. It's been my mantra for motherhood thus far, and I love how much it centers me and reminds me to really enjoy the moments - good and bad - that make up our lives.

erin and bee copy.jpg

6. What are your favorite things to do when you have down time?

I love reading, coffee dates with friends or catching up on old episodes of The Cosby Show with my husband. (We admire Claire and Cliff so badly!)

loechners-woodnote-137 copy.jpg

7. What motivated you to begin your blog?

A dead-end career path, actually! I was feeling uninspired as a copywriter in the boutique ad agency I worked, and when our art director quit unexpectedly, I raised my hand to take his place (although I knew nothing of design!). I headed home and furiously began researching design trends and artistic techniques and used the blog as a sort of catalog for those finds. It quickly grew into its own sort of beast over the years and I've loved using that platform to highlight emerging talent from across the globe.

8. In your own words, what is your design aesthetic?

Evolving? It's hard to pinpoint, as I have so many different tastes and my interests change near-daily! I've always admired people who have been able to truly edit their lives and nail down their aesthetic, because I fear I'll never be one! On the other hand, it's all the easier to find things that interest me when my taste is so very broad. :)

loechners-woodnote-111 copy.jpg

9. You've been blogging since 2006 (!). What have been a couple highlights of your career?

Oh goodness; I feel so blessed to have had many - becoming one of HGTV.com's first online personalities, filming an IKEA commercial, hosting creativity workshops across the country. But I think my favorite highlights are the ones that land in my inbox every now and then - stories from artists or designers or students who have found something on my site that validated the work they do and gave them a renewed sense of purpose to keep pursuing their creative paths. Those connections inspire me beyond words!

10. Have you had moments where you were disheartened/disenchanted with the blogging world? If so, how did you move on from it?

Oh, I think those moments come often, yes, but I think I have myself to blame when that sort of thing happens. I usually find that I've been spending too much time cyber-loafing and not regulating my information diet. Everything in moderation, you know? I try to be very intentional with the items I'm giving my attention to, so when I'm becoming disenchanted, I generally move on from the particular sites, blogs, feeds or streams I'm focusing on and try to take a step back, regain focus and return with a new perspective. Sometimes that happens in an hour - other times it takes a month.

loechners-woodnote-109 copy.jpg

11. You have a reputation for managing your time impeccably. What applications or resources do you find most helpful to stay organized?

Oh, that's so kind of you to say! I'm still 100% behind this post!:
http://www.designformankind.com/2013/01/how-to-organize-your-online-life/

12. What tips do you have for new bloggers?

Write, write, write. Your voice comes from practice (and is ever-changing, in my opinion), so put the fingers to the keyboard as much as you can. And, like most things, the moment it stops being fun (or taking away from living your life), take a break.

13. What is your style uniform?

I used to not have a "uniform", but since becoming a mom, I've realized how incredibly helpful it is to have standbys on hand! Right now I've been wearing a colored jean and chambray shirt nearly every day of the week. Perfectly wearable, but non-fussy (and relatively stain-resistant, which is key when feeding avocados to a baby!). Other times I'll throw on fitted yoga pants and a nursing-friendly gray v-neck tee and head to the grocery - I have no qualms about not looking put together at any moment!

14. What are your favorite places to shop for yourself and Bee (or brands)?

I'm a big online shopper, so I love Amazon for absolutely everything, Land of Nod for Bee, and Target when I need to grab something quickly (or not-so-quickly, really, because that place has a way of capturing you for the hour, yes?). I also shop Etsy often for gifts, handmade goods, decor or accessories.

15. What are your favorite small businesses or Etsy shops?

Oh, there are so many good ones! Hindsvik, Freshly Picked, AshleyG, Leah Duncan, LeahGoren, A Merry Mishap, Up in the Air Somewhere, Hruskaa, Something's Hiding In Here - the list goes on. (I'm leaving out small businesses, b/c otherwise we'd be here all day!)

16. How do you balance motherhood, being a wife, and managing a career?

I think, for me, the trick is to lower my expectations. It's easy to take a few glances at Facebook and see other people's immaculate homes, 4-course meals and styled ensembles and think you're not quite measuring up, but I think it's really important to be realistic about what's manageable for you, at this very moment. If that means going a few days without blogging to help out a family member or skipping your makeup routine to catch a few extra Zzzs, so be it. For me, it's all about which priorities take precedence. (More on this here!)

What is your favorite part about being a mother?

Being a mom defines so much of my heart. I longed to be a mom for as long as I can remember. Becoming a mom gave me such a love and purpose that I never knew existed. My heart swells in motherhood- I love every part of it.

What are your children's names/ages and your favorite characteristics of each?

My oldest is Aiden (3). I love Aiden's sensitivity and tenderness. I see so much of myself in him and can really connect with him in a unique way. My second is Ainsleigh (2), and my favorite characteristics in Ains is her contagious personality and loving spirit. She's my little sunshine girl! Blessing everyone she comes in contact with! My third is Apple (6 months), and Apple is joyful and easy going. Her spirit is just absolutely precious. I am so smitten with all three of these babies; they carry my heart in each of them!

IMG_0529edit.jpg.jpeg

What is your favorite part of the day or week?

When we are together as a family, away from tvs/ phones/computers- just truly enjoying one another. I am so grateful for the family God has blessed me with and enjoying them is such a treasure to me.

When do you feel most relaxed and content?

I feel most relaxed and content when I am organized, when I have stayed on top of work/ house work/ quality time with family. Basically when everything is working as it should!

Collage04.jpg

What is an ideal date night for you?

Dinner on a beach, watching the sunset and then walking down to an art gallery or a local candy shop.

How do you balance your home life and your blogging life?

The balance is constantly changing. I really only want to create when I am inspired so what this means is I will write when my heart is moving and I will save it in drafts...then I will publish it in my blog schedule when it allows for it. I try to not work when my babies are awake so that is always a bit tricky but somehow we make it work. My husband is amazing and incredibly supportive. He works from home so if I have a deadline for Disney baby or something that really needs to be done, he is great about trading off!

What is your "style uniform?"

My style uniform is normally jeans/pants, white t-shirt, sneaker wedges and a fun headband or hat!

What are your favorite Etsy shops and small businesses?

Rayna Jaye, Dream Catcher Baby, and Candy Kirby Designs

What are your favorite brands and stores to shop?

My favorite brands are Gap, lots of handmade shops & Anthropologie.

What is Hope Spoken? Tell us about the heart behind it.

On March 15, 2012, I wrote THIS post. I had a huge dream and strong push in my heart to host a Dallas conference. Then I started having complications with my pregnancy with Apple and heard a soft whisper to wait. Then two sweet girls scooped me up and asked me to walk along side them in their dream and that was an incredible honor. An honor to see God use them and to see their dreams come true. But I still had a pull in my heart. I still had my vision and my dream. So I took the leap.  Emily Anderson and Danielle Burkleo also have a dream and ideas and creativity and hopes and all of this collided into one beautiful event, Hope Spoken

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. // Romans 5:1-5

"We have to be brave with our stories so that others can be brave with theirs."

You're very passionate about your faith and sharing it. Can you tell us about your heart and your beliefs?

I am an evangelical Christian- Saved by faith and grace. God rescuing me is humbling and I forever owe Him my life. If my purpose here on earth is to share with others His love then by all means I should be using the platform that was given to me to so unashamedly. I am faithfully His. I make mistakes but I can promise that I will always share of His impact in my life.

_MG_0111edit.jpg.jpeg

Casey, THANK YOU. You're an inspiration to me to share my own "story" and and I am so grateful.

Mama Profile: The Ladies of Small Fry Blog by Kate Brightbill

whysmallfry.png

I'm delighted to share a little interview with the lovely ladies over at Small Fry Blog today. These girls manage to be stylish, sweet, and inspire readers every day! Their love for simple joys of childhood are highlighted in every single post they create. Follow Small Fry on TwitterFacebook, and Instagram.

What motivated you to start Small Fry Blog?

We wanted to create a space where we highlighted the joys and beauty of motherhood. While there are plenty of things that aren't beautiful about the hardest job on earth, we simply want our blog to be a place to remember the happy times! (also see their post "Why Small Fry?")

How did you meet and decide to work together?

We've been friends since junior high. Sometimes people are shocked to find we are real life friends who love each other and the opportunity to work together. We started the concept and development of Small Fry in August 2012.

How do each of you use your strengths to contribute to the blog?

Before we started Small Fry, Emily was a stylist, Nicole a photographer, and Jenna a graphic designer. Emily does all of the writing for Small Fry, Nicole the photography, and Jenna the graphic designs. We have a little system where each of us has touched a post. From start to finish, we work together on an idea, so each post is filled with love.

Emily.jpg

What has been the highlight of your Small Fry venture?

So many highlights it's difficult to choose! I think one of our favorite opportunities so far has been working with various amazing & gorgeous mothers who we've featured in our film series. We love seeing these moments with their children captured on film. it's a treasure for them but also for us to watch!

What are advantages and disadvantages to working together, as opposed to creating your own blogs?

It's definitely a perk to share the work load, have friends that know what it's like to run a blog & creative people to bounce your ideas off of! It can always be a challenge working with people, understanding different personalities & work styles. we definitely aren't void of that but we try our best to have a really good open dialogue & communication which has so far helped avoid any major issues! In the end we really love each other and enjoy working together.

Jenna.jpg

What is the best part of your days and weeks?

Jenna: the best part of my day is that moment in the evening after we've bathed the kids and are reading them stories just before bed. It's when that moment of "ugh is it bed time yet?" leaves, and in its place is the feeling of buying just a little more time with them awake.

Nicole: I love mondays. For me it's like a New Year's day once a week. I can start fresh, start new with goals & aspirations.

Emily: Sundays. The one day we get to spend all together with no stress on what needs to get done, where we need to go, or what needs a scrub down. one day that's at our own pace and all about family.

What is the best part about being a mother?

Jenna: the best part about being a mother is the relationship I get to have with these little people. they trust in and love me so much. That responsibility I have to love, protect & teach them- though it can be overwhelming- is the most amazing role i've ever had.

Emily: the best part about being a mother is watching all the love and care and energy you put in start to show. Hearing them say they love you, or complimenting the breakfast you made or telling you they liked your hair today? Nothing is sweeter.

Nicole: best part is having humans love you so completely, counting on you for everything & thinking you are the most wonderful thing there is.

Nicole.jpg

What are some favorite Etsy shops and small businesses?

The talent is so endless! Lately we've been loving Candy Kirby DesignsLittle Hip SqueaksLouandLeeFreshly Picked Moccasins etc....

What have you learned about balance for personal life and blogging life?

At the beginning we firmly decided that if it took away from our families that we wouldn't participate in it. Often, we will cancel a meeting or postpone a shoot because one of us needs to be with their family. That's the joy of our blog, is that our kids are involved in most everything!

Do you have tips for new bloggers?

Blog about what inspires you and not about what seems popular or trendy. If it's a concept you're passionate about than you'll never lack content or desire!

What have you learned about yourselves through your blog?

The blog has taught us that there's nothing we can't do if we are willing to invest in ourselves. We all deal with insecurities, but in celebrating what's positive about our lives & our children we've found a lot of joy.

Thanks so much ladies!

xoxo, Kate

Mama Profile: Jeanne Chan of Shop Sweet Things by Katie Brightbill

Jeanne Chan is a San Francisco based blogger with background in interior and retail design... and it shows. Her style at home and in beauty are impeccable, and she has been featured on the Glitter GuideGap StyldBy, Rue Magazine and Refinery29, to name a few. We are delighted to share a bit about the fabulous Jeanne for you today. Be sure to visit her beautiful blog Shop Sweet Things as well!

What are your favorite characteristics of your daughters?

My oldest daughter is 2.5 years old and she has so much character right now! It's really hard to pinpoint my favorite. She's pretty silly and makes me laugh all the time. I suppose I really like that she's starting to have her own opinion now. We are actually communicating through words and sentences which is pretty amazing. My one-month-old daughter is just a snuggle bug. She's too young to develop any distinct characteristics, but she does love being cradled and recognizes my voice from a distance, so that makes me really happy.

What motivated you to start your blog?

After I had my first daughter, I really wanted to stay home with her, but also wanted to find work I could do from home. I started researching the types of things I could do and that's when I learned about blogs and blogging as a business. It was completely new to me, but I was inspired by all the blogs out there, particularly those with a design and lifestyle focus.

What was your line of work before you started your blog? Was it a difficult decision to quit your job when you had children?

I was in the retail and interior design industry for 10 years before I started blogging. I began with sales and then went into visual merchandising and operations. From Banana Republic to French Connection to Louis Vuitton, I loved it all (especially with all the employee discounts and perks). When it was time to move on from the retail life, I looked into other opportunities that were fashion/design related. It was through referrals that I landed administrative positions in a few interior companies including textiles, furnishings, and interior design (Tucker and Marks). It was a perfect transition since I've always loved interior design and it was wonderful that I was able to get into that field. I wouldn't say it was difficult to quit my job because I've always loved entrepreneurship. It was the perfect opportunity to start something on my own. I would say the only challenge to quitting my job is making things work financially, especially with a growing family.

What has been the most exciting opportunity or collaboration you've had since becoming a blogger?

Being in the Target Inner Circle has been one of the most exciting opportunities. It's a selected group of online influencers that get to collaborate with Target exclusively on creative content for the blog and other social media platforms. I am so honored to be a part of this because I've always admired Target's brilliant marketing and business model and to be able to work with them on this level is like a dream come true for a blogger.

How do you balance your work and motherhood?

Before I had my second daughter, I tried to have a 10a-6p work schedule. Now that I have a newborn again, having a specific schedule is just not going to work. I have to be very flexible with when I can work and I try not to beat myself up too much if I can't get something out on time. I do, however, try to reserve my Fridays and weekends to be with them.

What is the best part of the day for you?

The best part of the day has to be when my husband gets home from his job and we all get to spend family time together. With the kids' early bedtime and my husband getting home late from work, we really only have 1-2 hours a day to spend as a family, so I really look forward to it.

What is your style uniform?

Unless I have a special event or occasion, my style uniform is pretty laid back. I love an oversized chambray button down with skinny jeans or leggings. I either wear it with my oxfords, loafers or a pair of classic sneakers. Lately, I'm in love with my Superga sneakers. I'm a tote bag girl, so I either throw in a pretty graphic canvas tote or a simple black leather tote. I never leave my house without touching up my eyebrows and my blush.

What are your favorite places to shop for yourself and your girls?

For myself, I do enjoy hitting the everyday stores like H&MTargetGapMadewellJ.Crew and Zara. When I feel like checking out more unique and splurge-worthy labels, I love visiting shops like Steven AlanScotch & SodaUnionmadeMill Mercantile, and Barney's. For my kids, I love doing their shopping at Gap and H&M. They're so young right now and they outgrow their clothes so fast, so I like to stick with these two brands - one for their high styles, and two for their wallet-friendly prices. Once in a while I do splurge on specialty labels and organic handmade products I often find online.

Do you have any tips for new bloggers?

Having blogged for just two years, I still consider myself pretty new. I think running a blog these days takes more than just creating content. Not only do you need to be original and have an authentic voice, but you also need to know how to market yourself and use different social media platforms to maximize your exposure. And don't use social media just to self-promote. Use them to connect and support other bloggers and brands you really admire. One motto I learned recently is "promote yourself once, promote others twice."

How's that for a little Monday beauty and inspiration? I want to go clean and redesign my home right about now. Thanks so much Jeanne!

XOXO, Kate & Erin

Mama Profile: Melody Brandon of Sweet & Saucy Shop by Katie Brightbill

When thinking of moms I admire for their ability to "do it all," Melody Brandon is one near the top of the list. She partners with her own mom to run multiple, incredibly successful and beautiful dessert shops down in Southern California, and keeps herself and her darling baby girl looking stylish and put-together while doing so.

What motivated you to start Sweet & Saucy Shop?

I found I had a passion for desserts and creating special moments for people around food. I didn't really think I would ever start my business so young, but I felt that the only way I could grow and learn as much as I wanted was to start my own business and create the type of product and experience I wanted to give people.

What is your favorite sweet that you make?

Anything in mini form! I have always been the person who likes to try a bite off everyone's plate, so when I make desserts I always prefer to make them in mini sizes. It allows me to try multiple bites of a variety of desserts and not feel guilty!

What parts of your business make you most proud?

It's the little moments that mean a lot to me- like when I get a letter or email from a client telling me how much they enjoyed their cake or dessert, or when I meet with a client and see their eyes light up while chatting about the various options, and of course I love when my employees are happy and enjoy what they are doing. It makes me proud to have created a workplace that people enjoy!

What is your favorite thing to make in the kitchen?

A really good chocolate chip cookie... warm out of the oven... nothing much can beat that!

What is your favorite time of the day?

I love waking up with Blake in the mornings. She sleeps with us most nights in our bed, and being able to wake to a smiling face, chubby cheeks, and tons of snuggles never gets old!

When are you most content?

When I am hanging out with family, enjoying a day off. I love simple things like going on morning walks, reading books to Blake, and eating delicious food with people I love.

What are your favorite personality traits of Blake?

I love how happy she is all the time! She came out of the womb a happy, easy baby, and she still is today (except when teething, haha). She is so friendly with people. She's also adventurous... always on the move and up to explore everything... a trait her dad is very happy about!

What is your ideal date?

Anything geared around delicious food! I love trying new restaurants and exploring a city through their little mom and pop shops. I also love flea markets and farmer's markets.

What are your favorite beauty brands & shops?

For myself, I basically want everything from Anthropologie stores! Lately I've been finding that I love shopping for baby clothes almost more than for myself... haha. I love BabyZaraGiltgroupe.com sales, Baby Gap, and Old Navy has surprised me with some pretty cute baby options!

What is your favorite Etsy shop?

I am obsessed with my sister's Etsy shop SaraRaeShop. I basically have one of her headbands on Blake at all times!

What have you learned about balancing life and work?

I have learned that nothing is as important as my baby girl and being with family, so I have tried my best to merge the two! I own the bakery with my mom and dad, so I see my mom at least three days per week, and Blake comes to work with me every day. When I first started the business 4.5 years ago, I would work 80-90 hours per week, but thankfully over time I have been able to work more manageable weekly hours. I love that I can work from home some days, and go into the shop others. Having the flexibility to make my own schedule is something I cherish!
