Getting Personal

Weekend Recap by Katie Brightbill

Another eventful weekend for us means a little weekend recap for you. My in-laws were in town, so we spent the weekend eating (way too) well and exploring our city with them! Maggie also started seriously walking (we are IN FOR IT) and consequently, got a black eye on the corner of the coffee table (yes, we do need to take our babyproofing to the next level), the girls baked with their grammi, and Brian and I got a much-needed brunch date. We all went to Venticello on Nob Hill to celebrate Brian's 30th (again)... We definitely recommend it, especially for a date night in San Francisco. It's cute & cozy and their risotto is amazing.

OH, and our second post is on the The Honest Company site right now! Head on over there and see what we're saying about stylish storage... as usual, you can spot Maggie inside her storage. She climbs into anything that resembles a box or basket.

Last thing: come back tomorrow to enter a fun little giveaway!! Something free? YES. See you then!

Today's Agenda by Katie Brightbill

Sometimes I have a little love for Mondays. Strange to confess, I know, but sometimes I enjoy the thought of having a day to clean laundry and make and eat dinner at home. I'm not going to lie, today I actually got out of the shower and looked through my drawers for some jeans... then opted for pj's. It's one of those little luxuries of being a stay-at-home mom. The fall chill is in the air, the girls are happy to be home playing with toys, and all is well.

What have we been doing, you ask? We had birthday extravaganza for my husband this weekend! He turned 30 and three of his favorite college friends flew into town to hang with him for boy's weekend. He was in total shock... we don't see him speechless much, but this was one of those moments. He took them to his favorite spots, watched  USC lose to Stanford (!!), and ate a lot. The girls and I got to spend quality time with their gramma & papa and hear the highlights.

We also had a little outdoor picnic brunch  party for him. We generally do nice dinners with a few friends for birthdays, so it was kind of perfect to switch it up this year and spend time outside with really good friends and eat brunch. Do you guys play cornhole? So fun! I totally recommend it.

Hope you get some rest this Monday!! (I know, that sounds all wrong).

XO,

Kate

Alt Blog by Katie Brightbill

Last year, I really started diving deeper into the blogging world. I'd been a casual writer on my own little family blog for long-distance relatives, and I read a couple blogs regularly, but I had no idea how big of an influence the blogging community was at that point. Last year, I got a twitter account and started "following" creatives whose blogs I read. It was right around the time that those big name bloggers were returning home from Alt Summit 2011 and writing recaps about their experience.

The recaps were amazing! Incredible talent all meeting in one place, hearing inspiration from brilliant people with huge followings, and building friendships and business relationships in one beautifully styled weekend? I wanted to be able to go to the next year's so.very.badly, but I had no blog to call my own; therefore, I had no reason to participate!

We launched this site officially August 6th (a little more than a month ago!) and the tickets were totally sold at that point. We have been posting daily on here since, and have realized how very much we would have benefitted from the Alt Summit this January, but it was too late! Until now... there's an

Alt Summit ticket giveaway

in the works over on the Alt blog and I would LOVE to win it. All they ask is that we share our favorite post of theirs on our own blogs!

Tricky request... there are so many good ones on there! I decided today to share this one about how very very important it is to celebrate the successes of other people. What a perfect post! In a world that is so bent "me me me" and "being the best" it is so important to find joy in other people's victories. How bitter life would be if we were cranky whenever someone else did better than us! My dad always told us "there will always be someone better," with regard to our talents; meaning, if we were REALLY great at soccer (we weren't), and the star of a team, there is no need to have a big head about it! There's another star of another team somewhere out there who is better. Why should I be caught up in thinking I'm the only one who is good at something or other? Why be upset that someone is accomplishing their goals faster than I am accomplishing mine? No need.

The Alt Summit Blog is full of little written treasures like this, just waiting to be read. Seriously. For blogging inspiration and business advice check out the new Alt blog. Hop on over and see for yourself!

Mini Getaway by Katie Brightbill

We went to the L.A. area last weekend and it was positively perfect. We were there to visit friends, and we DROVE for the the first time with two children. I was a little apprehensive about the potential meltdowns during the 6.5 hour drive, but my girls were total gems. It worked great to leave right at Maggie's first nap time at 9:30am. While we drove, we looked outside for "animals" for Sophie, chatted a bit about favorites, turned on The Lorax, then stopped for lunch about 45-minutes after Maggie woke. Already to the halfway point with no issues! After some quality playtime, both girls took afternoon naps then enjoyed their time in the backseat and reading books and eating snacks until we arrived!

The weather was ideal. Sometimes all you need is a little breather from the every day mundane to get the family fresh and invigorated. We spent Saturday on Redondo Beach which is a great spot for families because it's not insanely crowded like some of the other beaches around there. Totally recommend it. It was super hot that day, so we spend the evening grilling outside (my husband's favorite thing!) and watching the kids run around the backyard.

Sunday's big excursion was a little drive to Venice. Ahhh how I love Venice. Eclectic locals, gorgeous architecture, picturesque sunset, and strolls through the canals... yes. OH, and one of our favorite spots to eat: C&O's. It's a must-try. We sat in the courtyard surrounded by murals to look like Italy, and stuffed ourselves with their complimentary garlic rolls... amazing. The wait staff was very accommodating to little ones: cups with straws, great children's menu, and patience with pint-sized yellers (that would be my Maggie). Psss- quick tip if you're going: call and put your name in ahead!

Monday we took an 8-mile bike ride along the south bay coast. We could not have asked for a better end to our weekend. We borrowed bikes, but we definitely could have rented for very reasonable prices. It was a total highlight of the trip and one that I 100% recommend. SO worthwhile!!

'Til next time SoCal. :)
