Five Things. by Kate Brightbill

I have been sick this week, another cold took me down- I will not be waving a flag of wellness for 2014, let me assure you. When I get sick, I begin thinking everything is against me, and nothing is supposed to be easy and lovely in life. When I begin thinking these thoughts, I take the advice of this wise husband of mine who says "whenever you are finding yourself upset about everything, write a list of 10 things for which you are thankful."

SO, these are five things making me thankful RIGHT NOW-

{I have ten, but I'm entirely too longwinded to write about everything}:

1. Home Sweet Home.  I may be sick, but I have a home that is full of warmth and coziness and love. We have a fireplace we only dreamed of having in our first 4 homes {we moved a lot}, and we have a dishwasher, and we live in our favorite city ever. I have slippers and sweats and a cup of tea to be made as many times as necessary while I nursed my cold. I've known personally people who were without homes, and I've seen with my own eyes smoky tiny one-room huts that some large families call home. I've seen in my own beautiful city that- mere miles from us- there are homes of total depravity and hopelessness and daily hunger. It breaks my heart all the needs there are and how few of those great needs we can truly fill, and makes me incredibly grateful for our own home and the warmth and love here. It is not to be taken for granted.

2. Family. I'm talking the four of us, and I'm talking our extended family. We have some love poured on us regularly by both sides of our families and it is fuel that keeps us trucking when we're down. My parents are on vacation this week, and their absence makes me even more thankful for their part in our lives. My in-laws are far in distance, but near because of...

3. Technology. We use our technology to instantly send mundane photos and videos from the day-to-day back and forth cross-country. I'm so thankful that we live in an era where friends and family can feel close no matter what the distance is.

4. Transportation. This week, I'm thankful my mom let me borrow her car, but most weeks I'm thankful for our public transportation. I mean, it drives me nuts when I am 20 feet away from a bus stop as a bus pulls away, but generally it just means we need a lesson in patience that particular day, you know? No biggie. I can get from here to there and I am thankful for that.

5. Music. We play music so much around here... I wish this blog could play our soundtracks. Sometimes we dance crazy dances with crazy music. Sometimes we are fancy ballerinas. Sometimes we need reflective worship music to remind us that through the turmoils of life, we are held safely by our Creator and it'll all be okay. Sometimes we play our own music with a ukulele and our voices, and lyrics that are just not quite right... and yet they are just right. I'm thankful for music.

So after a week of being a bit self-absorbed and bummed about my inability to function properly without siestas and NyQuil, this weekend I'll just choose to be thankful.

Happy three-day-weekend to all, and to all a good night.

Sophie has a few style notes for you in her second week of school:

  • Sharing clothes is always a good idea {her jacket belongs to Maggie and yes, we asked Maggie's permission, and yes, it was granted}.
  • Accessories are FUN {She insisted on three bracelets this morning. Snag them here}.
  • Always, always hang the next day's outfit the night before. {prevent rushed mornings!}

More tomorrow. Tonight is for chillin' with Brian and a cup of decaf.

Short, sweet... over & out. xoxo

School... Week 1 by Kate Brightbill

I'm soooo tiiiiiiired!!

Who thought it was a great idea for SFUSD to start the school year with a full week of school? Ahhh, we're beat around here. I fell asleep on the couch at like 9:45 last night, and tonight I crashed for a nap on the couch at 7pm, (basically when Brian walked in the door), neither of which ever happen. We're the 11:30pm types, without fail, so clearly school is winning this week.

Good news is: it's Thursday and I haven't cried in two days. Thumbs up for me. Sophie hasn't cried at all, that champ. She's like a professional kindergartener... who knew? For all my fears and insecurity about her not going to preschool, she's a fantastic little school kid. She's made so many friends, and she's just HAPPY with the whole deal. She's asking that I don't pack so much food in her lunch because she's always the last one eating in the cafeteria, and she'd rather be playing, which I think is hysterical. I can handle a little constructive criticism. ;) When I got the lunchbox, I didn't think her whole appetite would fit in that box, but turns out, recess is way more appealing than eating.

So yes, apart from getting these kids out of bed in the morning, and bawling my eyes out all day Monday, this week is going just about as perfectly as can be.

Around home, we're missing our girl big-time. Maggie way prefers big sis over me, but we'll get a rhythm going and get accustomed to being on our own soon enough. I've found I've had far more time and patience to allow her to take her scooter slooowwwly here and there, because no one was waiting on us. Today-- lo and behold! She was brilliant with that infamous purple scooter! Speeding up and down the blocks and turning with no problem. A little one-on-one with her mama may be good for her after all.

Tomorrow is Friday and Friday is my favorite. You with me?

The Girl with Yellow Hair by Kate Brightbill

This girl.

How does one write how they feel about little girls who hold their heart so deeply? These girls run, laugh, and LIVE with bits of my heart, and I am trying to put into words the way that I love them... it doesn't fully translate. It's okay, it doesn't need to translate. I will fumble to describe the joy that my Maggie brings to me on this day, her third birthday.

Maggie is laughter. Maggie smiles with her whole tiny self, as if laughter is bubbling behind her smile always. She begins her days with a bright voice, she harasses big sis when she isn't awake. The phrase "may I please" precedes nearly everything she requests, and I have no idea how it has stuck so thoroughly in her vocabulary, but it is a proud tidbit for me. She has mastered the art of charming her way out of trouble-- she looks up with big eyes and a sweet voice to keep us from scolding her. She goes directly to sleep at nap time and more often than not needs to be awakened from that nap, but she never ever wants to sleep at night. Go figure!

Her lovey is a giant pink stuffed octopus, called affectionately "Monster." She has the loudest pretend lion roar you've ever heard, and she is one of the only people I've ever known who actually squeals in delight when she's laughing. She runs fast and climbs high. She loves to pretend to be a kitty who is afraid of doggies, and she pretends to be a princess ballerina. She has heart.

She is youngest around here, but she is not without opinions. She's the unwavering type when she really sets her mind to something. She makes most fashion choices for herself. She has a bit of OCD, which I can totally appreciate... she wants colors in their rightful spots, she wants her shoes perfectly in line.

She is our sunshine and I am honored to be her mama. Happy birthday Maggie girl!
