In Pictures: July by Kate Brightbill

July13.jpg

Ahhh, summer in San Francisco. It has been an absolutely gorgeous year overall, but a lot of July has been covered in fluffy, white clouds. Good thing fog is gorgeous, because it's chilly.

America's Cup has been a huge highlight to the month. We're becoming fanatical about getting to the water to watch sailing regularly, and we got to experience an amazing race with my sailor grandpa, who explained the ins and outs of racing, over burgers sans kids. Major highlight of July.

I laughed a LOT, ate more cupcakes than I should, took far more pictures of my children than any normal person, and did more exercise than I have in probably ten years. So all in all, yes: July was a very good month and I cannot believe tomorrow will be August already.

"The days are long but the years are short..."

true that.

Celebration Inspiration by Kate Brightbill

Maggie's 2nd birthday is coming wayyy too quickly, and I just started getting my party-planning in gear! Because it's a 2nd birthday, it'll be a small party, thankfully, but I want to make it very "Maggie." She's a big fan of puppets: finger puppets, hand puppets, puppet fans... they all make her laugh, so I used my winnings from the Land of Nod to get a surprise puppet stand for her. We have plenty of garland to hang, and goodie bags and party hats are a total requirement, according to her big sister.

Here's are some other things I love for celebrating my little Maggie-girl:

That Was Fun: Renegade Craft Fair SF by Kate Brightbill

Renegade3.jpg

I spent some time- and a little money- at the Renegade Craft Fair this weekend. There were some REALLY good vendors this year, so I took pictures so you can get to know a few of the pretty shops and check them out online! It's seriously like Etsy in real life, which I love, because you can see the quality up close!! It's fantastic. The kids don't last too long in the crowds, so that's good for the pocketbooks (I never actually call them pocketbooks in real life, but it's a pretty fun word to type and totally felt like it belonged in the sentence, you know?).

Clockwise from top left:

1. Toyota Screenprinted Bags (so we could see how it's done!) for free AND raised money to help women through  #toyotagiving.. love a good cause. || 2. Rufflewood Pillows, with gorgeous prints and perfect seams for great prices! || 3&4. Honey & Bloom Prints and goodies. || 5. The crazy delicious ZConfections caramel corn. I couldn't get enough!!

Clockwise from top left:

6.  Shapes & Colors Textiles cheerful coin pouches. || 7. Ahhh! I didn't get the shop name, but such gorgeous color in these glass hanging plants (if you know, do tell!) 8. My favorite: incredibly crafted toys by A Summer Afternoon || 8. My dream bike was resting outside by the water, so obviously I took a picture.

Oh, and hey! BONUS: freebie photo booth sessions! We weren't all ready for the first one... I think Maggie wins for best all-around variety of shots (as any good toddler should), and Sophie wins for most perfectly still-like-a-statue-with-a-mustache. She only moved her eyeballs, it seems. ;)

Thanks for the fun, Renegade! Till next time. xoxo

Loving and Linking // 02 by Kate Brightbill

Prettiest handmade dominos everrrrr.

A look at parenting in Japan... my favorite read of the week.

My favorite pin of the week... ah, I just want to sit right there.

Though fall is my favorite, I'm not quite ready to dismiss summer, and this is so cheerful... and on sale!

This week, I actually MADE something delicious and want to share it, rather than wishing I would... banana bread! And no, this recipe doesn't take three hours... more like 20 minutes to prep and 1 hour to bake or so. Sophie and I did it together and it tasted SO GOOD. Brian has already put in a request for me to make it again.

Cutest card for saying hello using the good ol' USPS.

If you like me and my little blog, stylesmaller is a finalist over at Red Tricycle awesome awards, and, well... I'd love your vote! :)

So this is a post for APRIL, but it's stuck with me so much that I think it's worth sharing this week: great room-styling essentials that don't (all) break the bank.

Sophie & I made art together ages ago, then painted over it again a couple months later, and I'm feeling like it's time to refresh the canvas again. I'm loving this inspiring collaborative art color pallet.

Last thing! If you live near SF, be sure to visit the Renegade Craft Fair!! It's at Fort Mason. I've been the last few years, and this is the first year Brian and I both came home and said we could have bought a LOT more than we did. So much good stuff!!!

Goals, Approval, + Love by Kate Brightbill

I haven't written a lot this week, but I've been thinking a lot. And sometimes that's a better place to be.

I've been thinking about goals and motivation and what in us creates these expectations for ourselves.

There are so many goals I've developed through life. There are goals to get married, have babies, live in San Francisco- I've done these things earlier than expected. There are goals I had at 22 to visit all the states before 30, work as a creative in marketing or styling, learn to sail, learn Spanish, sing with a band.. the things that never came to be (for the better!). We create personal goals to eat healthier, work out more, and maybe they'll be met sometimes, sometimes not. Goals are good.

But goals can also be unhealthy.

There's a verse that says "what good is it for someone to gain the whole world, but forfeit their soul?"  (mark 8:36)

Since I read this essay last week, I've been wondering the same thing. When is what I'm doing enough? And what is the motivation behind each goal of mine? What really matters?

Here's my example: I'm working out these days. It's healthy at this point; I've gone to Pilates multiple times a week and on most off days, I take a three-mile run. When I run I think to myself about how I can just push a little harder, and get a liiittttle more fit. It's good and it's bad. I do want to be healthy, but what is my motivation? Just to be healthy? That's great if it is, but I know I want the acknowledgement that I'm in shape, and I want people to be proud of how I work. WHY does it matter? It doesn't. Really though, it doesn't. So I can reach a certain point where I'm an accomplished health and workout machine, and gain the "whole world," but to what end? My runs this week have been more healthy and more enjoyable, because I've been spending the time in thought and quiet prayer, rather than "ooh, it'll seem I never ate those bagels because I ran so far."

When I think of what I want my girls to see in me- do I want them to see a go-getter? A goal-oriented mother who can accomplish what she sets her mind to do? A healthy woman? Yes, I do. But is that the most important thing for them to know about life? No.

The things I want my girls to know?

I want them to know first and foremost that they are loved by God who created them. I want them to know that they are loved by their mom and dad. That they are enough the way they are. That the expectations of people are unrealistic and that they don't have to be everything to everyone. People may or may not be impressed, no matter how hard we try. Working hard is important, but working hard to maintain relationships- to forgive, to laugh, to cry with others through good and bad times- is equally important. That people will let them down, that good health is not a given, no matter how nutritious we are, that circumstances will come that are not peaches and posies, but they will become stronger for them. I want them to love people and adore their Maker. I want them to be humble and confident. I want them to feel, I want them to experience. I want them to be gentle.

I don't want them to spend their moments searching for approval from others... because it may never come.

I want my children to spend their days thinking of how they can make OTHERS feel confident and beloved. Show others that they are valued and loved as well.

I know what I want for them... now I need to spend MY days showing them... and believing with all my heart that I am enough, not concerning myself with seeking approval from people, and loving others without restraint.

The trickiest part about teaching is learning it myself first. ;)

xoxo.

ONE. TWO. THREE. FOUR. FIVE. SIX. SEVENEIGHT. NINETEN

I've mentioned before the fall is my favorite season, so maybe this is a little early, but I've been eyeing some REALLY cute stuff for the fall. This is just a portion of the cute back-to-school picks out there for the little girls. I especially love that most of the pieces can be worn interchangeably because they're all in a similar bright color tone!
