Giveaway: $150 to Minted! by Kate Brightbill

StyleSmaller

The other day, we were at dinner and I took a picture of Maggie's adorable toddler hands clutching lemonade with hot pink nails. In my mind, all at once it made sense. I've been wanting to repaint the girls' room and change it a bit for awhile. NOW, I actually have a plan... bright pink + yellow! I built inspiration around those colors {and added plenty of other color}, using pieces from Minted's art collection to complete the look {I'd been eyeing this yellow striped chair print FOREVER}.

My favorite place to search art prints is Minted. They have sooo many options for the whole house, and two of the ones inspiring my girls' room are directly from there. They're fresh and modern, and have something for everyone. I know for a fact that if I go on their site, they'll have a print I'll love. We picked up a piece for my room too {When I get it framed and have my room set to go, I'll post pictures!}. We love Minted so much that I'm doing a giveaway for YOU to enjoy their goods too!

I'm not sure if you're a person who loves or hates giveaways, but I love them if they're for a brand like Minted! Here's how to win: use this link and ENTER HERE!

Oh Hey, Let's Ride Ponies by Kate Brightbill

This is a post about the day my girls' dreams came true. Look, you can see it in her eyes.

Really though. REAL pony rides!! Portola Farms and Jan Pearce Training in Woodside invited the girls to come for a ride on their gorgeous pony and were met with a thrilled "how soon can we come?" These aren't the sort of offers we would refuse around here. We snagged the car from my husband for the day, and took a drive down to Woodside.

I kept the whole thing a secret from my children, and when we pulled up they squealed, "I SEE HORSIES!" ... This is the stuff, folks. Seeing your children elated is one of the most heartwarming things possible. Seriously.

We went into the barn and gazed at the horses in their stalls before we were lead to the pony they would ride. Her name is Sweet Pea and she's the most magical animal they've ever seen. "She's so beautiful," said my wide-eyed two-year-old. They were fitted for helmets, and Sophie sweetly {or nervously?} said Maggie can go first. Maggie was thrilled and off she went... ps. Pardon the explosion of pictures, but when your children ride ponies, it's absolutely necessary.

Maggie kept saying "good job!" rather than "whoa," and patting her was her favorite part.

You know that smile you see on your child that means they're too happy to do anything but manage a delighted little giggle? This is that. It's a mix of pride and nerves and excitement and joy. It's the BEST, that's what it is.

I'm thinking we'll make this a regular summer trip. The excitement and chatter Brian heard when the girls were home and telling him about their experience made us want to get them back as soon as we can!

Much thanks to Esther, Portola Farms & Jan Pearce Training for the most amazing day!! Get your kiddos {or yourself!!} out there asap! xoxox.

Backpacks by Kate Brightbill

The backpack.

I'd call it the most important of all school supplies. It's the every day bag to contain all things school-related! The front-runner for Sophie is pink polka dots, obviously, and it's Gap & 30% off right now, so that makes it my front-runner too. ;) Generally speaking, the backpack has come a long way. I spent half my years with Jansports that basically matched the rest of the class... I will give a shoutout to the Esprit outlet and my sister for equipping me with cute backpacks the other half of my school years. Pretty sure I was a trendsetter in 3rd grade when I went with a peach-colored messenger bag before anyone had messenger bags... sooo... thanks mom & sis!

Laundry by Kate Brightbill

Today I was doing laundry again, and it seemed I had enough thoughts whirling in my head that I needed to write a post devoted to the subject of laundry.

The girls were playing imagination the other day, that daddy was Mickey, Sophie was Minnie, and Maggie was Minnie Junior. and I was the cleaning lady. It cracked me up, and then made me shake my head. Children can be the most funny, frank little beings, can't they?

Indeed, I am cleaning lady here. I honestly LOVE clean, uncluttered beautiful spaces. I try to get a moment each day where my home looks as such. Home is really such a work in progress. It's obviously not in an average budget to have walls entirely filled with perfect art in exactly as we envision, kilim rugs disguising dust particles with gorgeous dignity, or non-hand-me down furniture whose drawers open and close dreamily.

For now, I'd much rather keep our home-sweet-imperfect-home in good order, and the rest can progress over time... hence the affectionate "cleaning lady" reference by my children. I promise, I play with them too.

This post was to be about laundry, so let me get back to that. Tonight I was moving a load of laundry from the washer to the dryer, thinking grr, I would rather have had my feet up on the coffee table, snacking on a donut. I thought again, and shifted thinking toward how thankful I was for that moment. Doing laundry, yes.

About a million years ago, aka in 2005, we went on a trip to Kenya {where I left bits of my heart behind}. While there, I was chatting with some local girls a few years younger than me about laundry. They were teaching me to wash my laundry effectively with a bucket and a bar of soap. They asked about the machines they'd heard we use for our laundry. "Why?" they asked, "...why would you use a machine when doing laundry is so easy?" They asked this as they were using their full arm strength to wash article after article for the house, that they would later hang with those same arms to dry in the hot sun. Contentedly doing their laundry, sweetly working their hardest.

The question the girls asked was met with a pause and an embarrassed "I don't know."

What did I not know?

I didn't know how to explain to them how sometimes I like to complain about tossing a load of clothing into a washer that does ALL THE WORK for me. I didn't know how to explain that around here, we need to do load after load after load every week, because we have so many clothes at our disposal.

In the moment I felt like complaining, I got a glimpse of perspective. Of gratitude.

Sooo bring it, markers on sheets. Bring it, dirty handprints on clean dishtowels. Bring it, spilled milk.

I have no room to complain. ;)

NINE by Kate Brightbill

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

When I was a junior in college, in my spring semester, I had one foot out the door. I was ready to be done with school, I had six credits left to take after that semester, and I hoped it would be back home with familiar people, near all the places and food I so loved.

Then I met Brian. I met him and we became friends. I wanted to be nowhere except where he was, which meant one more semester at school. A year later, we got engaged, then married nine years ago today.

My husband has taught me so incredibly much these past nine years about living according to the verse above. He puts me above himself endlessly. He tells us that we do not need to keep records of wrongs done to us. When we feel let down by people, he teaches me that just means we need to show grace. He never lets me stay angry long, and he is always hopeful and perseveres when things are tough. I wouldn't ever want to go through the good or bad without him by my side.

Marrying Brian was a beautiful decision... He is a rock. I don't write about him here all that much, but he is the one encouraging me in real life, and loving me, and caring about my heart, listening to me talk {and talk and talk...}, and loving me in spite of me and all my flaws.

Happy Anniversary love!

xo.

Happy July! by Kate Brightbill

Too many pictures have been taken and remained un-posted, and July 4th has come and gone too quickly. To summarize one of our favorite weekends of the whole year, here are some pictures. Basically we just wear all variations of red white and blue for a few days, and escape the marine layer of fog in SF for sunshine in pretty towns south and north. Friends, family, grilling, ahhhh... I would take a repeat of this kind of fun any week. ;)

Annnnd this one is my absolute favorite. Sophie was LOVING the pool toss... I mean, to be 5 again, right? The B&W was accidental, but I kind of think it makes the picture perfectly artsy. HA.
